Description

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (commonly abbreviated as DHHB, and also known by the trade name Uvinul® A Plus) is a modern, oil-soluble UVA filter specifically designed to provide long-lasting protection against long-wave UVA radiation (320–400 nm), with peak absorption in the UVA1 range (340–400 nm). These wavelengths penetrate deeply into the skin, contributing to premature aging, pigmentation disorders, and long-term structural damage.

Unlike older UVA filters, DHHB is highly photostable, meaning it retains its protective performance during prolonged sun exposure. It also works synergistically with UVB filters such as Ethylhexyl Triazone, Bemotrizinol, and Octocrylene to deliver broad-spectrum protection in high-performance sunscreen formulations.

DHHB’s oil solubility allows for smooth integration into creams, lotions, and water-resistant sunscreens without leaving a white residue. It provides a pleasant skin feel, making it suitable for both daily-wear facial sunscreens and intensive outdoor sun care products. Its stability also helps extend the effectiveness of less stable UV filters, such as Avobenzone, by minimizing degradation under UV exposure.

Approved in many international markets, DHHB can be used at concentrations up to 10% in the European Union, Japan, and Australia. However, it is not yet approved for sunscreen use by the U.S. FDA.

Well tolerated by most skin types, DHHB has low skin penetration and a minimal irritation profile, making it an excellent choice for sensitive skin formulations. It is also valued in cosmetics with SPF, such as tinted moisturizers, BB creams, and foundations, due to its ability to protect without affecting product color or texture.

With its superior UVA protection, excellent photostability, and compatibility with other UV filters, DHHB remains a premium choice for formulating sunscreens that ensure long-lasting, broad-spectrum, and cosmetically elegant sun protection.
