Octyl Methoxy Cinnamate (commonly abbreviated as OMC and also known as Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate or Octinoxate) is one of the most widely used oil-soluble organic UVB filters in sunscreen and cosmetic formulations. It provides effective protection against UVB radiation (280–320 nm), helping to prevent sunburn, skin cell damage, and photoaging when used as part of a broad-spectrum sunscreen blend.
OMC works by absorbing UVB rays and converting them into less harmful heat energy before they can penetrate the skin. It is often paired with UVA filters like Avobenzone, Bisoctrizole, or DHHB to ensure complete UV coverage. Known for its lightweight texture and ease of formulation, Octyl Methoxy Cinnamate integrates smoothly into lotions, creams, sprays, and makeup products without leaving a white cast.
While OMC offers strong UVB protection, it is less photostable than some modern UV filters, meaning it can degrade under extended sun exposure. To counteract this, formulators often combine it with photostabilizers such as Octocrylene or Bemotrizinol to maintain consistent performance throughout use.
OMC is approved for use in sunscreen products in many regions, with maximum concentrations of 7.5% in the United States and 10% in the European Union. It is well tolerated by most skin types, although individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation.
Beyond sunscreen, OMC is also used in daily moisturizers, BB creams, lip balms, and hair care products to protect against UV-induced damage and color fading. However, environmental concerns over coral reef safety have led to restrictions in certain locations, such as Hawaii and Palau.
